Using SmartLinc Probes with HomeVision

The HomeVision (and HomeVision-Pro) input ports can interface with the various sensor probes made by SmartLinc.

Setup

Requires: A cable with a 3.5mm stereo jack on one end and wires on the other end.

Connections: Plug the probe's 3.5mm plug into the cable's jack. Connect the cable's bare wires into HomeVision's port B or C terminal block as follows:

bulletRed wire (the plug's tip) to the 5V position.
bulletGround wire (the plug's body) to the ground position.
bulletGray wire (the plug's center ring) to one of the eight input positions.

NOTE: If the wire colors don't match these descriptions, use an ohmmeter to determine which wires connect to the terminal block.  One HomeVision owner recently reported that his SmarLinc video probe used the following wiring scheme:

bulletWhite wire (the plug's tip) to the 5V position.
bulletGround wire (the plug's body) to the ground position.
bulletRed wire (the plug's center ring) to one of the eight input positions.

Notes

bulletThe TV Sniffer Probe usually has a several second delay after the TV goes off before the probe's output changes. The probe is usually faster on HomeVision port B than on port C. If you're using the Multifunction Expansion Board, port 1 will be faster than ports 2 or 3.
bulletIf you choose to cut the probe's plug off and wire it directly to HomeVision, you will have to identify which wire is which. On one probe we tested, the wires were as follows:
bulletGreen wire = ground
bulletCopper-colored wire = 5V
bulletRed wire = output signal

We found these wires to be difficult to work with. We had to solder another short wire onto each wire before we got electrical continuity. Therefore, we recommend using a separate cable with a jack.
